Considering liposuction to help you reduce fat and show off your fabulous body? You’re on the right track, because that’s exactly what liposuction can achieve. We are covering Q&A on choosing liposuction and what surgery is like, but no liposuction discussion would be complete without talking about the recovery process.
How long does liposuction swelling last?
Mild to moderate swelling is common after liposuction, as your body naturally draws fluid to the healing tissues. Typically, swelling peaks a day or two after surgery, and gradually subsides so that the bulk of swelling is gone after 3 to 4 weeks. Slight, residual swelling may persist for up to 3 months, but usually this is undetectable to others.
PATIENTS WHO WEAR COMPRESSION AS INSTRUCTED AFTER LIPOSUCTION
TYPICALLY ENJOY A MORE PLEASANT RECOVERY AND SEE RESULTS SOONER THAN
PATIENTS WHO SKIP THE COMPRESSION.
Do I have to wear a compression garment?
In most cases, we have our patients wear compression after liposuction. Compression garments serve several purposes:
• Support healing tissues, which can reduce post-op soreness
• Prevent excessive swelling, which both improves your comfort and protects your results
• Reduce tension on scars, which helps them heal well and become as faint as possible
On average, we’ll ask patients to wear compression 24/7 for the first 3 to 6 weeks, except when showering, and at night for a couple of months after that. Our patients who wear compression as instructed typically enjoy a more pleasant recovery and notice their results sooner than patients who slack off on the compression.
How much time do I need off work for liposuction?
Most PSCHR patients return to sedentary or desk jobs within 5 days after traditional liposuction and as soon as 2 to 3 days after BodyTite liposuction. If you have a more physical job, you may need up to 2 weeks off of your normal job duties. Your plastic surgeon can help you determine an appropriate amount of time off based on your procedure plan and the type of work you do.
When can I workout after liposuction?
The majority of patients are allowed to resume cardio and strength training starting about 3 or 4 weeks after liposuction. It’s essential to start easy and build gradually back to your previous intensity. Listen to your body: stop if anything hurts or just doesn’t feel right. (And if you accidentally did a little too much and anything seems strange, check in with your surgeon.)
WHEN IT COMES TO WORKOUTS AFTER LIPOSUCTION, IT’S ESSENTIAL TO START BACK EASY AND LISTEN TO YOUR BODY: STOP IF ANYTHING HURTS.
While you may be thinking ahead to when you can work out again, you’ll first have to follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions to the letter. The rules on what you can and can’t do right after surgery are key to a normal recovery. You’ll have to take it very easy in the days after surgery, but light movement—easy walking and stretching non-treated areas—can and should begin as soon as you go home. (Getting up and walking around is important to reduce risk of blood clots after surgery.) Most daily activities and non-strenuous household chores can be resumed within
1 to 2 weeks, although you may have to modify activity to avoid straining your incision sites.
How long does it take for liposuction results to show?
Post-op swelling can obscure results at first; some patients notice immediate improvements, while others don’t notice much of a difference at all until a few weeks after surgery. Typically, patients consider their results “final” after about 3 months, when most post-op swelling is gone and they are back to their normal routine. Patience is key, as is following your plastic surgeon’s aftercare instructions.
Is fat reduction from liposuction permanent?
Technically, yes. The particular fat cells your surgeon physically removes will not reappear, and, if you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, your results should last for years to come. However, liposuction does not make you immune to weight gain or loss. Your remaining fat cells, both in the treated area and elsewhere, can grow and shrink. To ensure long-lasting satisfaction, it is important to have liposuction for the right reasons, when you are generally happy with your weight but wish to improve your shape.
