A hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure where the surgeon involves transferring hair follicles from the donor site to the recipient site. The donor site is mostly the sides and back of the scalp and the recipient site is the front and top portions of the head. This surgical procedure is carried on under local anesthesia.
There are two techniques by which hair transplant can be performed-
FUT or Follicular Unit Transplant- In FUT hair transplant procedure, the surgeon usually removes 6 to 10-inch strips of skin from the back or side of the head. After extracting the strip from the donor area the surgeon then sutures up the skin which remains concealed within the surrounding hair. Then the surgeon segregates the strips to be removed from the scalp into 500 to 2000 tiny grafts, each of which contains individual hair. These are then transplanted to the recipient area carefully without damaging any hair follicles.
FUE or Follicular Unit Extract– This is another hair transplant approach where the surgeon will first shave the donor area of the scalp. Then the hair follicles are removed one by one carefully from the donor area. Immediately after extracting the hair follicles the donor area may be left behind with some bleeding, swelling, but the area will heal soon with small dots that will not be visible with a head full of hair.
Now hair transplant procedure is basically same unless choosing either of these hair transplant approaches. After extracting the hair grafts from the donor site, the surgeon then cleans and numbs the area of treatment. The surgeon also makes holes or slits in the recipient area with a special kind of scalpel. The hair grafts are then very carefully placed within these individual slits. Now depending on the size of the balding area and the number of hair grafts required, surgeons may take 4 to 8 hours to complete the procedure.
What Must Patients Expect after Undergoing the Hair Transplant Procedure?

The patients are recommended to wear a bandage on the scalp for at least few weeks. Some medications for sleep, pain, and antibiotics is mandatory until the patient has recovered completely.
