Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUE) is one of the popular and cost-effective solutions to hair loss. If you are interested in undergoing this treatment, you should familiarize yourself with the stages that your hair will need to go through before the final effect is achieved.

What is FUE?

FUE method hair transplant technique involves implanting up to 4000 individual donor hair follicles from one area of the scalp to the thinning or bald area. This creates a new hairline full of hair and the procedure itself takes just one day.

In FUE hair transplant procedure, there is less scarring in the donor area as the follicles are extracted individually and there are no restrictions of hair cut. Also, FUE hair transplant cost is highly affordable and produces a more cosmetically pleasing appearance.

How does it differ from FUT?

FUT or Follicular Unit Transplant is a cheaper technique but does not provide good results. In this procedure, strip of hair is removed and placed on the scalp using a trichophytic closure to minimize scarring and to allow hair to grow through the scar tissue. The strip is cut into different follicles which are grafted into the bald areas.

When will I start to see results after FUE?

The new hairline which appears immediately may be swollen and the donor site may also have swelling.  Your surgeon will recommend the post-surgery care regime which you need to take care of for good results. You will be advised to sleep with your head elevated on pillows for the first night or two. You can resume working after taking rest for a short period of time.

Post-surgery, you will notice redness, swelling and scabbing subside and after some days the grafts appear firm in place. This indicates that you can resume your normal routine work. However, it is advised to wait for a month for applying any chemical treatment to your hair.

It’s all falling out! Help!

There are chances when you see shedding hair within the first few weeks and your tresses begin to look as it did before transplant. This is normal as the follicle goes into the dormant phase after being starved of blood supply. It is only your hair loss, not the follicles. Hair follicles enable growth so when it remains intact, hair growth will follow.

Post-surgery, the follicles recovered will begin to grow. It grows at around 1cm per month, so it will take a few months to get a head full of hair to become a reality.

I’m spotty! Is it infected? What’s going on now?

As your hair begins to grow after a few months, your scalp may become spotty and develop acne-like appearance. Though it may be a good sign as the hairs are trying to come out but get trapped as an ingrown hair. Initially, the hairs are fine and colorless but after some time they begin to get thicker and fuller. The growth, however, seems to be patchy but this is the part of the initial growth and will even out with time.

The majority of new hairs will appear in around five or six months and at 8 to 10 months it will be the thickest as the follicles reach maturity. FUE hair transplant results can be seen in around 12 or 18 months and the texture and color continue to develop and change slightly.

As everyone is different and experiences different rates of hair growth and thus the time frame varies. However, the results are worth waiting for when the surgery is done by an expert surgeon.
