Overview

This procedure involves taking hair follicles from one part of the patient’s scalp (donor area), where the growth is high density and transplanting it to another part (known as the recipient area) where the growth is not as dense.
The method to remove the hair follicles from the donor area is different and not everyone is eligible for all types of transplant. For example, in FUT, a whole strip of tissue is extracted from the donor area, from which a huge number of grafts are extracted. Typically, the number of follicular units extracted is in thousands. Also, the FUT procedure is known to leave behind scarring as the area from where the strip is removed needs to be stitched up.
What is FUT Hair Transplant?
The process of Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) is also known as the strip procedure. In this procedure, a strip of tissue containing thousands of follicular units is taken from the donor area of the patient’s scalp. The human hair grows in follicular units, which is a group of hair strands. Each unit can contain anywhere from one to four hair strands. It is these units that are actually transplanted during the transplant procedure.

The follicular units from this strip are then extracted by carefully dissecting it and storing them in a refrigerated special holding solution. The refrigerated follicular units are then grafted on the recipient area one by one. All the transplant is generally done in one sitting and thus, the FUT procedure is an exhaustive and time-consuming procedure.
