The accumulation of fat in the flanks or love handles is due to some typical reasons like aging, pregnancy and other hormonal changes or even genetic predisposition. Since these factors cannot be changed or altered so liposuction is chosen to be the most effective solution to remove the fat disposition in those areas.

Benefits of Love Handle Liposuction

  • It provides a better contour and balance to the body.

  • The body appears slimmer.

  • As the love handles influence the size of the clothing so the candidates may more likely drop a size or two after undergoing liposuction.

  • The procedure is least invasive so the recovery time required is much less than other procedures.

  • Liposuction is a very safe procedure and performed under local anesthesia.

Liposuction Techniques

  • Before beginning with the liposuction procedure the candidates are administered with local anesthesia in most of the cases to carry on the procedure smoothly without any feeling of discomfort.

  • After anesthesia has taken effect the small incisions are made on the marked area which is on the flanks through which the cannulas are inserted. This thin, long rigid tube off approximately 3mm in diameter is used to suck out the fat permanently from that area. The surgeons take meticulous care to improve the shape and decrease the size of the flank area on both sides of the body.

  • Thus the gradual removal of the fat makes the flank area proportionate with the remaining part of the body and the surrounding regions so that it gives more of a natural appearance.

  • The basic liposuction technique may vary since the techniques have evolved ever since the past decades. However, surgeons commonly use tumescent liposuction that delivers an anesthetic solution to the subcutaneous fat and which allows the procedure to be performed under local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia.

  • The procedure is preferred by the majority of the surgeons because it completely eliminates the risks related to surgery and blood loss during the procedure. Some of the surgeons avoid implementing other liposuction techniques like ultrasonic assisted liposuction or laser liposuction since they may carry out risks related to permanent nerve damage.

After undergoing liposuction the recovery may require for just a few days up to few weeks depending on the treated area. Surgeons advise that their patients wear a compression garments at least the first several days after liposuction to enjoy a speedy recovery. However, after few weeks the patients feel comfortable enough to remove the compression garment. The minor pain and discomfort associated with the liposuction surgery can also be relieved with pain medications and brisk walks.

For the first several days after the tumescent liposuction, the anesthetic solution from the surgery drains out from the incisions. The drainage of the anesthetic fluid actually facilitates the healing and reduces the recovery time.

Liposuction risks include anesthesia related risks, bruising, change in sensation of the skin, fluid accumulation, infection, irregular contour. However, if candidates are careful enough and follow the post-op instructions then they can more likely avoid such side effects or complications. Moreover, none of these side effects are permanent and can be resolved easily.

The results of the liposuction of the flanks or love handles are usually long lasting provided a stable weight and general fitness or a healthy lifestyle. The improved contour will be visible after the swelling and fluid retention subsides. However, with aging, it loses some of its firmness but most of the improvements are relatively permanent. Ultimately it can be easily concluded that following your surgeon’s instructions is the key to the success of any surgery.
